SOLDB-7. P.1888 MK I, 2nd TYPE SWORD BAYONET Maker: Wilkinson Dated Oct.1896. Matching numbers on the bayonet, scabbard and frog. “82” over “102”. The regimental number “82” was issued to 4 different individuals from 4 different units, who served in South Africa during the South African War, or Boer War as it has become known. First was GNR. W. ALLEN, R.C.F.A. (Royal Canadian Field Artillery). He formerly served with the 77th Batt. Wentworth Batt. Of Inf. He received Bars to his Queen's South African Medal for Cape Colony, Rhodesia, Orange Free State and Transvaal. Second is Pte. N. Glass, Lord Strathcona's Horse, formerly from Willoughby, NWT. He received Bars to his Queen's South Africa Medal for Natal, Orange Free State, Belfast and South Africa 1901. Third was an RCD Pte T.P. Ship who died of Enteric Fever 27 July 1900. We believe he could be ruled out. Fourth is Pte J.A. Donnelly, 1st C.M.R. From Pincer Creek. He received Bars for Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Johannesburg and Diamond Hill. Each unit had regimental numbers from 1 on up, so it could be any one of these four. This is an excellent set rarely found in this condition and matching. EXC. (BCB-B213, frog

B-10: Ross M.1905 MK I KNIFE BAYONET: This bayonet is marked in a very unusual way. The tang of the grips is stamped “25.B.D.52 9/09”. This is the 25th Brant Dragoons, D Troop Number 52, with the date 9 (SEPT) 1909. The normal markings would have been on the left side of the pommel. Another interesting feature is the Broad Arrow stamped above the Ross Rifle Co markings on the right side of the pommel. The scabbard is also dated 1909 with C Broad Arrow. This was the first year of manufacture for the MK I Bayonet. Blade is clean with some light “frosting” on the right side and a few minor pitting spots on the left side. The wood grips are VG. w/s VG (BCB-C4)

B-12: ROSS M.1910 MK II KNIFE BAYONET. Dated Feb. 1916. Grips VG+. Hilt and ricasso retain almost all the original blue. Blade VG+. The scabbard dated 1909 has had the original belt loop removed and been fitted with a P.1908 web frog. This was a fairly common field adaption when the troops were issued the P.1908 webbing and still retained the Ross Rifle. Later in 1916, the Ross was withdrawn and the S.M.L.E. issued in its place. The back of the frog is stamped “2BNCOL” over “268”. Missing bayonet press stud. This is a nice example of a trench used Ross Bayonet. w/s & frog V.G. (BCB-C7)
